1969년 10월 20일 경복궁에서 개관한 이후 1973년 덕수궁으로 옮겼다가(덕수궁 현대미술관), 1986년 8월 경기도 과천시 막계동에 있는 대지면적 7만 3360.9㎡, 총건축면적(연면적) 3만 4006㎡의 현 건물로 이전하였으며, 1998년 12월 덕수궁에 미술관 분관을 개관하였다. 2001년 현재 약 4,000여 점의 작품을 소장하고 있다.

부서별 조직은 관장을 중심으로 사무국과 학예연구실로 대별된다. 사무국은 관리과·전시과·섭외교육과로 구성되었고, 학예연구실은 조사·연구·기획·자료정보·작품관리를 포괄한다. 그외 도서실, 자료실, 보존과학실 등이 운영되고 있다.
주요 활동으로는 한국근대미술60년전(1972), 한국현대미술100인전(1973), 재외작가초대전(1982), 한국근대미술자료전(1984)을 비롯하여 1986아시아현대미술전, 프랑스20세기미술전, 와이즈만컬렉션전 등의 전시회 개최와 토요미술강좌, 미술관학강좌, 초등교사 미술연수 등의 교육프로그램을 운영하고 있다.
