(BEIJING, January 2) -- The National Stadium, or the "Bird's Nest," is in the final stage of construction and will be ready for two pre-Games sport events and the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympiad on August 8, 2008.
The project's unique steel structure has earned the favor of both artists and the public alike. Time Magazine took it as one of the ten architectural marvels for 2007.And although it will be the last Olympic venue to be inaugurated, in March or early April, it has been a destination for many world figures, such as former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former IOC President Antonio Samaranch, incumbent IOC President Jacques Rogge and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, when they visited Beijing.
"Please reserve a seat for me, I want to take part in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games," said Sarkozy, as he toured the site of the National Stadium on November 27, 2007, during his first visit to China.
Another foreign guest has been John Stephen Akhwari of Tanzania, who visited the "Bird's Nest" on December 30, 2007. It took four hours and 30 minutes for Akhwari to finish the 42km marathon in the 1968 Olympics as he dragged his injured feet following his accidental fall after completing 19km. An Olympic legend in his seventies, Akhwari was amazed by the charm of the "Bird's Nest."

The National Stadium, the main stadium of the Beijing Olympics, will hold two Good Luck Beijing sport events before the Olympics. On April 18, the starting gun will sound here for the 2008 IAAF Race Walking Challenge. But the venue's true maiden test operation will be the Good Luck Beijing Athletics China Open from May 22 to 25, 2008. There will be 42 events for men and women and four Paralympic wheelchair events. Well-known 110m-hurdler Liu Xiang of China will be the focus of the tournament.
Preparations for the two tournaments are progressing as scheduled. The operation officials at the managerial level have been assigned to their posts, and more than 3,000 volunteers are being recruited.
The National Stadium will host the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, and athletics and football competitions. After the Olympic Games, it will become a center for sports and cultural activities and other creative industries. Its post-Games use is under extensive planning.
A four-star hotel is to be built on the northern side of the stadium's stands. When completed, it will accommodate spectators who want to experience the night elegance of the "Bird's Nest."
As part of the landscape of the National Stadium, a Walk of Fame is in the works to record the handprints of the Chinese and foreign Olympic champions and those coaches and sportsmen who have made outstanding contributions to the sports cause of China.
