Dubai set to open world’s tallest building


DUBAI: Dubai is set to open the world’s tallest building amid tight security on Monday, celebrating the tower as a bold feat on the world stage despite the city state’s shaky financial footing.

But the final height of the Burj Dubai - Arabic for Dubai Tower - remained a closely guarded secret on the eve of its opening. At a reported height of 2,684 feet (818m), it long ago vanquished its nearest rival, the Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

The Burj’s record-seeking developers didn’t stop there.

The building boasts the most stories and highest occupied floor of any building in the world, and ranks as the world’s tallest structure, beating out a television mast in North Dakota. Its observation deck - on floor 124 - also sets a record.

“We weren’t sure how high we could go,” said Bill Baker, the building’s structural engineer, who is in Dubai for the inauguration. “It was kind of an exploration. ... A learning experience”.

Baker, of Chicago-based architecture and engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, said early designs for the Burj had it edging out the world’s previous record-holder, the Taipei 101, by about 33 feet (10m). The Taiwan tower rises 1,667 feet (508m).

The Burj’s developer, Emaar Properties, kept pushing the design higher even after construction began, eventually putting it about 984 feet (300m) taller than its nearest competitor, Baker said. He is keeping quiet about the exact height.

Dubai’s ruler will open the tapering metal-and-glass spire with a fireworks display Monday evening.

Security is expected to be tight. Local newspapers quoted Maj. Gen. Mohammed Eid al-Mansouri, head of the protective security and emergency unit for Dubai Police, saying more than 1,000 security personnel, including plainclothes police and sharpshooters, will be deployed to secure the site for the opening.

Work on the Burj Dubai began in 2004 and continued rapidly. At times, new floors were being added almost every three days, reflecting Dubai’s raging push to reshape itself over a few years from a small-time desert outpost into a cosmopolitan urban giant packed with skyscrapers.

By January 2007, thousands of labourers, many of them brought in on temporary contracts from India, had completed 100 stories.

The finished product contains more than 160 floors. That is over 50 stories more than Chicago’s Willis Tower, the tallest record-holder in the U.S. formerly known as the Sears Tower.

At their peak, some apartments in the Burj were selling for more than US$1,900 per square foot, though they now can go for less than half that, said Heather Wipperman Amiji, chief executive of Dubai real estate consultancy Investment Boutique.

Besides luxury apartments and offices, the Burj will be home to a hotel designed by Giorgio Armani.

It’s also the centerpiece of a 500-acre development that officials hope will become a new central residential and commercial district in this sprawling and often disconnected city. It is flanked by dozens of smaller but brand-new skyscrapers and the Middle East’s largest shopping mall.

That layout - as the core of a lower-rise skyline - lets the Burj stand out prominently against the horizon. It is visible across dozens of miles of rolling sand dunes outside Dubai. From the air, the spire appears as an almost solitary, slender needle reaching high into the sky.

The Burj’s opening comes at a tough time for Dubai’s economy. Property prices in newer parts of the sheikdom have collapsed by nearly half over the past year.

The city-state turned to its richer neighbour Abu Dhabi for a series of bailouts totaling US$25 billion in 2009 to help cover debts amassed by a network of state-linked companies. Burj developer Emaar is itself partly owned by the government, but is not among the companies known to have received emergency cash.

Emaar has said the entire Downtown Burj Dubai development, which includes the tower, will cost US$20 billion to build. Sales of properties around the Burj are meant to help pay for the tower itself, which analysts say is unlikely to be profitable on its own.

Jan Klerks, research and communications manager for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which tracks world’s tallest claims, said the building’s real value might be that it is the “biggest city marketing campaign” Dubai could have come up with.

“Put your name and that of the Burj Dubai on an envelope, and no postal service in the world will have problems delivering the mail,” he said. - AP

국내 삼성물산이 건축한 세계최고 높이의 빌딩인 버즈 두바이가 아랍에미리트연합(UAE) 대통령의 이름을 따 '버즈 칼리파'로 이름을 바꿨다.

칼리파는 아랍에미리트(UAE)의 현 대통령 이름인 셰이크 칼리파 빈 자이드 알- 나흐얀에서 따 온 것이다.

셰이크 모하메드 두바이 통치자는 4일(현지시간) 열린 `부르즈칼리파` 개장식에서 “오늘 UAE는 인류 최고 높이의 건물을 갖게 됐으며 이 위대한 프로젝트에는 위대한 인물의 이름을 붙이는 것이 합당하다”고 말했다. 이어 그는 "오늘 부르즈칼리파의 개장을 선포한다"고 선언했다.

삼성물산 건설부문과 삼성SDS의 무선메쉬네트웍(WMN: Wireless Mesh Network, 以下 WMN) 기술이 UAE의 ‘버즈 두바이' 건설 현장에서 위력을 발휘하고 있다.

WMN이란 유비쿼터스 센서 네트웍 및 U-City 무선 자가망 솔루션으로 각광을 받고 있는 무선통신 기술로, 국내에서는 전산원이 기상정보 수집을 위해 제주도/우도 등 평지에서 USN관련 분야에 일부 적용한 적은 있으나, 버즈 두바이와 같이 초고층 빌딩 건축현장에선 전 세계적으로 아직까지 적용된 사례가 없는 것으로 알려졌다.

이번 버즈 두바이에 적용하는 WMN시스템은 기존 무선랜이 Point to Point(P to P) 또는 Point to Multi Point (P to MP)방식인데 비해, Multi Point to Multi Point(MP to MP) 방식으로서 하나의 Link가 끊어져도 다른 우회 경로 제공해 줌으로써 Traffic을 여러 경로로 분산시켜 네트워크의 부하(로드)를 줄여준다는 장점도 갖고 있다.

삼성SDS의 WMN시스템은 통합 가설 통신 네트워크 구축을 통해 All-IP기반의 음성, 데이터, 영상 등의 현장통신 서비스를 안정적이고 효과적으로 제공함은 물론, 통신망 이설 작업이 많아 기존의 케이블은 전부 버리고 공사 기간 중 평균 2~3차례 새로 설치해야 하는 공사현장의 특성상 발생하는 가설통신 신설/이설/증설 비용을 크게 줄일 수 있게 된다.



버즈 두바이 건설현장의 삼성물산 건설관계자는 “이전엔 여러 대의 통신기기를 통해 통신을 해야 했으나 삼성SDS가 제공하는 무선 자가망을 통해 WiFi폰 기능을 탑재한 스마트폰으로 실시간 현장관리가 가능해 업무 효율이 대단히 높아졌다.”고 밝혔다. 그는 “특히 인터넷을 통해 세계 어디서도 현장에 설치된 카메라에 접속하여 건설현장을 실시간 모니터링 할 수 있어 본사와의 유기적인 커뮤니케이션이 가능하다.”고 덧붙였다.

한편, 버즈 두바이 프로젝트 PM을 맡고 있는 U-City 추진단 장준영 책임은 “삼성SDS는 국내PJT를 수행하면서 기술력을 인정받은 첨단빌딩관리시스템 및 WMN분야의 전문인력을 버즈 두바이 현장에 투입시켰다.”라고 말하며 “버즈 두바이가 세계 최고층 건물로서 위치를 확고히 할 뿐 아니라 삼성SDS의 WMN기술이 초고층 빌딩에서도 틀림없이 빛을 발휘할 것으로 확신한다.”라고 밝혔다.

아랍에미리트(UAE)의 두바이 정부는 두바이 통치자인 셰이크 무하마드의 즉위 기념일인 4일 오후 8시(한국시간 5일 오전 1시) 버즈두바이 개장식을 개최할 계획이라고 3일 밝혔다.

한국의 삼성물산 건설부문(삼성건설)이 공사를 총괄한 세계 최고(最高)의 인공구조물 '부르즈 두바이'가 5년간의 대역사(大役事)를 마무리하고 문을 연다.

새해 벽두에 문을 연 세계 최고 빌딩 부르즈두바이가 앞으로 10년 정도는 세계 최고 빌딩의 지위를 유지할 것으로 보인다.

`버즈(burj)`는 아랍어로 탑을 뜻한다. 두바이 정부는 `두바이의 탑`이라는 뜻의 버즈 두바이가 세계로 뻗어 가는 두바이의 경제성장을 상징하게 될 것으로 기대하고 있다

건물 높이는 기존 세계 최고 빌딩 기록을 갖고 있는 대만 `타이베이 101`의 508ｍ를 크게 압도하는 것이다.

2005년 2월 착공 이후 12억달러의 공사비가 투입된 버즈 두바이는 1~39층은 호텔, 40~108층은 고급 아파트, 109층 이상은 사무실로 구성된다. 123층과 124층에는 두바이 전경을 한눈에 볼 수 있는 전망대(At the top)도 들어선다.

건물 전체에는 총 54기의 승강기가 설치됐으며 전망대까지 이르는 승강기 속도는 세계에서 가장 빨라(분당 600ｍ) 전망대까지 1분 안에 도착할 수 있다.

건설부문은 상층부 첨탑을 올리는 첨탑 리프트업 공법을 비롯해 GPS를 이용한 수직도 관리 등 첨단 공법을 도입했다.
